A Soggy Family With a Little Bit of Crunch

A crunchy mom? What is that?

Mother who supports homebirth, breastfeeding, baby wearing, cloth diapering, co-sleeping, gentle discipline, etc. One who questions established medical authority; tends to be vegetarian and/or prepare all-organic foods. See crunchy and hippie.
That crunchy mama is breastfeeding in public again!

While looking up how to explain what a 'crunchy mama' is I came across a forum on themommyplaybook.com where a woman was saying she does some of these things but not all of them. "I wonder what a middle crunchy mommy is.. perhaps I am a little soggy." Perfect! I am a Soggy Mommy! hahaha! Then I found a test you can take that says I am "sprinkled with granola." So now I'm a soggy mommy with a little crunch. I love the internet.
Here's what makes me a bit of a crunchy mommy: I cloth diaper, I use cloth wipes, I (sometimes) make Haleigh's baby food, I baby wear, I co-nap, Haleigh wears an amber necklace, and I attempted breastfeeding. I, however, do believe in vaccinations, public schools, eating meat (oh boy, do I ever love my meat), I clean with *gasp* clorox (sorry Hannah!), and I believe in hospitals and epidurals. I am a semi-crunchy mommy that is very happy with our choices. Our choices - why is it there is nothing about 'crunchy daddy's?' Maybe (probably), most men aren't in love with the whole idea of baby wearing/cloth diapering but what about the few that are? I happen to have a man who loves our cloth diapers, who turns his nose up at disposables (that's right, we're cloth diaper snobs - just ask my grandma who so kindly pointed this out to us) and wears our baby to go get the mail, and walk the dog. We are a crunchy family or at the very least a soggy family with a little bit of crunch and proud of it!

  1. I guess Paulie and I are somewhat crunchy, too. We breastfed for as long as we were able to-- unfortunately that was only 4 months. We co-sleep and babywear. I delayed one of his vaccinations (the Hep B), but he's had all of the rest exactly on schedule. I chose to give birth in a hospital-- I felt a lot safer that way. I got an epidural, too. I'd decided ahead of time that I would try to do it without an epidural, but that I wouldn't beat myself up about it if I ended up needing the pain meds.

I feel Paulie organic food whenever possible. On a really good day, I've gotten his food from the farmer's market-- but that doesn't happen very often at all. As you know, we cloth diaper as much as we can-- but even when Paulie's with me, he's not in cloth 100% of the time, although that's what I'm aiming for.

I aspire to be a lot more crunchy than I actually am-- one of these days I want to learn how to do some really basic cooking. Before Paulie was born, I said I'd only give my son wooden and cloth toys-- well, guess what, he *loves* all of the colorful, plastic Fisher Price stuff-- the noisier the better. So I buy it for him.

I guess Mamahood (life?) is about doing the best we can, given our current situation.

  2. omfg I totally was daydreaming about this yesterday...spooky that I read your post today! I was thinking that to some i may be a little granola because I EBF, enjoy cosleeping part time, I carry Abbey sometimes (but also like a stroller ride) and we've always used natural cleaning products. But I don't cloth diaper at least not yet(sorry, don't hate on me) while I'm no carnivore, I'm far from vegetarian anduse local produce but not organic. I decide in my head that I was a non-organic, slightly-processed granola bar LOL
